Musical Instrument Digital Interface, or MIDI, was supposed to be the universal language for synthesizers and electronic instruments. Any MIDI-equipped device should talk to any other—in theory. But in practice, older instruments often won't play nicely with modern implementations. According to Hackaday, the mismatch is raising questions about what musicians and makers can do when legacy gear clashes with contemporary systems.
