Inside U.S.-Iran talks in Switzerland
politics
According to Axios, U.S. and Iranian negotiators held marathon talks in Switzerland that stretched into Sunday night, working toward a sixty-day effort to reach a new nuclear agreement. Vice President JD Vance is leading the American delegation, alongside White House envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner.
The talks are significant because both sides remain engaged despite deep differences. Discussions focused on all elements of a nuclear deal, regional security, and the Strait of Hormuz鈥攁n issue that came to the fore after Iran claimed it would close the shipping lane in response to Israeli actions in Lebanon. U.S. officials said they made clear their position that the strait must remain open and reported good progress on that front.
The negotiators also discussed enforcement mechanisms for ceasefire agreements in Lebanon, where Hezbollah and Israeli forces have clashed. According to a U.S. diplomat involved, both sides are laying groundwork for a broader framework to continue talks between political leaders and technical teams. High-level discussions conclude Monday, with technical teams expected to stay longer in Switzerland to continue negotiations.
