According to The Guardian, Australia's defence minister Richard Marles says China has carried out a long-range missile test that Beijing itself acknowledges is nuclear-capable, calling the development deeply destabilising. Marles said he doubted the timing was a direct response to prime minister Anthony Albanese being in the Pacific to sign a new defence pact with Fiji, but stressed that Australia remains concerned. His broader worry, he said, is a dramatic Chinese military buildup unfolding without any strategic reassurance to the region's neighbours, and no clear explanation for why those capabilities are being developed. Marles said the missile demonstrated a much greater range for deploying a nuclear weapon.
