Strait of Hormuz: Iran attacks three ships in 24 hours, U.S. says

world

According to Axios, Iran's military has attacked three commercial ships passing through the Strait of Hormuz in the span of twenty-four hours. Citing two U.S. officials, Axios reports that Iranian forces fired at least two missiles at vessels transiting the strait on Monday night, and the Revolutionary Guard struck a third ship on Tuesday morning. Both of the first two vessels suffered significant damage, but no casualties were reported. The strikes threaten to unravel a memorandum of understanding signed less than three weeks earlier, in which Iran had agreed to halt such attacks, and they follow the expiration of a separate one-week ceasefire. Axios notes that U.S. officials expect Washington to retaliate with strikes on Iranian targets, after indirect talks in Doha last week ended without much progress.
