On revolutionary love in AI safety

According to a LessWrong essay by Troy Tian, the AI safety field is caught in a contradiction: recruiters say they desperately need talent, yet they remain intensely selective about who they hire. At a BlueDot Impact panel in May, frustrated applicants asked the obvious question—if you're so desperate for people, why reject so many?
Tian's answer: the real bottleneck isn't aptitude. It's mentorship and genuine community. The author credits senior organizers at their university AI Safety club with providing encouragement, guidance, and support through rejection—the human elements that kept them engaged when the field's hypercompetitive culture could have pushed them away.
By contrast, Tian watched friends and colleagues face identical rejections but without that network of support; they either left the field or stalled entirely. The insight: "revolutionary love"—authentic mentorship and human connection—may be the field's most overlooked lever for retaining talent and scaling impact. Community, not competition, is what the movement needs.
