In nineteen ninety, internet standards engineers published an official proposal to transmit data using carrier pigeons. RFC eleven forty-nine, authored by David Waitzman and released on April first, outlined a system to carry Internet Protocol traffic by birds such as homing pigeons. According to Boing Boing, it was one of several April Fools' Day standards the internet's standards body submitted that year—a playful reminder that even serious technical bodies can indulge in whimsy.
