Trump's messy path to peace

world

According to Axios, the U.S. and Iran signed a ceasefire deal last Wednesday to end their war. But the peace has proven unstable. Iran has threatened to close the Strait of Hormuz, Israel has continued bombing Lebanon, and President Trump has made escalatory threats against Iran's leadership. Despite these tensions, both sides are conducting high-level talks in Switzerland on a longer-term nuclear agreement. The negotiations, led on the U.S. side by Vice President JD Vance and envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner, wrapped up early Monday after eighteen hours of round-the-clock discussions. Qatari and Pakistani mediators reported encouraging progress, and the two sides agreed to finalize a nuclear deal within sixty days. U.S. intelligence, however, remains skeptical that a full agreement will materialize, with some officials doubting Iran's willingness to make the necessary nuclear concessions.
