U.K. Prime Minister Keir Starmer resigns
politics
According to Axios, British Prime Minister Keir Starmer resigned Monday after weeks of government turmoil, becoming the seventh British prime minister in the last decade. His tenure lasted just under two years. The resignation followed disastrous Labour performance in May local elections: the party lost control of Wales' Parliament, recorded its worst Scottish election results on record, and shed over one thousand two hundred seats in England. The crisis intensified following controversy over Starmer's appointment of former minister Peter Mandelson as US ambassador. Mandelson's ties to Jeffrey Epstein and his subsequent failure of security checks created a political firestorm. Starmer has agreed to serve as caretaker while Labour selects a new leader by September, with former Tony Blair-era minister Andy Burnham emerging as a potential successor.
