window.showDirectoryPicker opens up a whole new world
dev_tools
Chrome has introduced a new web capability: the showDirectoryPicker API, which allows websites to request access to folders on your computer and read or write files directly within them. According to developer Steve Harrison, this is reshaping what's possible for browser-based applications. Instead of storing data in cloud services, local-first apps can now let you manage your own files—markdown notes, photo libraries, video projects—through a sophisticated web interface, all while keeping your data on your own hard drive. The real opportunity, Harrison explains, is combining the polished, fast UI of modern web apps with the data control of traditional desktop software. Browser-based photo editors and compositing tools can now work directly against your filesystem, matching the power of standalone applications without requiring installation or updates. It's a fundamental shift in where the line between web and desktop software blurs.
