NASA’s Webb Finds Clues to Ancient, Distant Origin of Comet 3I/ATLAS
science
The James Webb Space Telescope has captured new insights into one of the solar system's rare visitors. Three I slash ATLAS is an interstellar comet—a icy wanderer from beyond our star system that swung closest to the Sun in December twenty twenty-five. As it moved away, Webb turned its powerful instruments toward the comet and measured the chemical composition of its ancient ice, freshly warmed and vaporizing from solar heat. These measurements offer clues to the comet's distant origins. According to NASA, the observations shed light on how these pristine, ancient materials behave when exposed to our Sun's energy.
