Git is forever. I'm building Oak anyways

dev_tools

According to Hacker News, developer Zach Geier is building Oak, a new version control system designed from scratch for AI agents. While Geier acknowledges Git is purpose-built and excellent for distributed human collaboration, he's reimagining version control for a world where AI coworkers handle parallel tasks. Oak eliminates the need for full repo clones and worktrees through virtual mounts—meaning agents and humans can work on multiple tasks without downloading everything. The system is already open-source, runs self-hosted, and can export to Git at any time. Though early-stage and missing some features, Geier's team has bootstrapped the project entirely on Oak itself for several months, with plans to ship an e-ink display to the first hundred subscribers.
