Democrats are struggling with a growing mess in Maine
politics
Maine Democrats are facing an unwelcome primary result. State Auditor Matt Dunlap, a progressive, defeated state Senator Joe Baldacci in Friday's Democratic primary for Maine's second congressional district. The Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee had spent seventy-five hundred dollars backing Baldacci's candidacy.
According to Axios, the DCCC is being noncommittal about Dunlap. They haven't added him to their "Red to Blue" program—a list of supported candidates they extended to another DCCC-backed primary loser just weeks ago. Inside the party, operatives are suggesting Dunlap must prove his own viability to earn backing.
Dunlap faces Republican former Governor Paul LePage in a general election. The district went Trump plus nine in twenty twenty-four. Democratic insiders told Axios they believe the seat is probably lost.
