The schizophrenic Chicago artist who became an outsider rock legend
entertainment
Wesley Willis was a Chicago-based musician and visual artist who, after being diagnosed with schizophrenia in nineteen eighty-nine, became a cult figure in the outsider-music world. According to Boing Boing, Willis created his distinctive sound by layering partially-spoken performances—rapped in an MC style—over partially-sung vocal passages that had a nasal, out-of-tune quality reminiscent of punk rock. What made his approach uniquely his own: he recorded it all using the auto-accompaniment feature on a Technics KN keyboard. Rather than letting his circumstances limit him, Willis forged a completely original artistic identity that resonated with listeners who valued authenticity and creative risk-taking over polish.
