Shipyard: How We Built Slack’s Next-Generation EC2 Platform
dev_tools
Slack Engineering has unveiled Shipyard, its next-generation platform for managing Amazon EC2 instances. The key shift: treating infrastructure as immutable deployable artifacts rather than continuously updating long-lived servers. This brings container-like practices to EC2—including automated safety checks, metrics-driven rollouts, and a new fleet-visibility tool called Peekaboo. Per Slack's engineering blog, the platform supports multiple architectures and operating systems, uses layered base images for fast provisioning, and automatically refreshes instances on a schedule to keep deployments secure and predictable.
