Google takes the hit in AI's talent war

ai

According to Axios, major AI labs are experiencing significant talent departures. Noam Shazeer, who co-authored the foundational Transformer paper behind ChatGPT, left Google DeepMind for OpenAI. Days later, Nobel Prize winner John Jumper departed DeepMind for Anthropic. Nvidia also acquired the Essential AI team. The pattern reflects a broader belief that artificial general intelligence is near—and top researchers are placing strategic bets on where to be. Companies with forthcoming IPOs like Anthropic and OpenAI can offer greater financial upside than already-public rivals such as Google. But money is only one factor. Researchers also weigh leadership quality, computing access, and which labs will develop AGI responsibly. These departures reveal an essential truth: in frontier AI, the value isn't just in algorithms, but in the judgment, leadership, and talent-recruitment ability of exceptional humans.
