The Coming Loop
dev_tools
According to Flask creator Armin Ronacher, writing this morning on his blog, the rise of AI coding agents is reshaping software development through what he calls "harness loops"—outer orchestration systems that coordinate AI work beyond the agent's internal tool calls. While these loops excel at mechanical translation, performance optimization, and security scanning, Ronacher worries that unattended loops produce defensive, overly complex code with poor invariants. His deeper concern: as machines write, review, patch, and maintain code, developers may lose their ability to understand what they've shipped. Even developers avoiding loops can't fully opt out. Attackers and competitors are already automating their work, creating pressure to loop defensively. Ronacher's core question: as software shifts from deterministic machines to evolving organisms maintained by AI, how do we retain human judgment and responsible oversight? The future likely runs on loops, but the cost to human comprehension remains uncertain.
