The "polar bear sea monster" that fought whales was a blob of whale

Back in October nineteen twenty-four, witnesses in Margate, South Africa reported watching what they thought was a giant polar bear battle two killer whales offshore for three hours. Farmer Hugh Ballance described the creature attacking with its tail and heaving itself twenty feet out of the water. Boing Boing reports that the mysterious white blob later turned out to be whale remains — one of history's most spectacular cases of mistaken identity.
