Federal judges are setting AI guidelines for lawyers while themselves learning the technology. Axios reports that a federal judge in Mississippi sanctioned four attorneys and canceled a civil trial after both sides cited fake cases generated by artificial intelligence. Researchers have identified over one thousand seven hundred cases where generative AI fabricated legal precedent. Meanwhile, sixty percent of judges surveyed reported using at least one AI tool. To address the gap between adoption and expertise, several federal judges founded the Judicial AI Consortium with a focus on education. One retired judge compared it to learning a new language when you're seventy years old.
