AI race splits in two as China wages open-weight insurgency

Axios reports that open-weight AI models from Chinese labs—Moonshot, Tencent, Xiaomi, DeepSeek, and others—now occupy the top five positions by usage on OpenRouter, a major model marketplace. Unlike premium systems, these are free to download and run locally, and cost up to fifty times less than frontier models. Most business tasks don't need cutting-edge capabilities: one AI investor told Axios that open-source models will eventually handle ninety-five percent of enterprise queries, leaving premium options for just the hardest problems. The competitive threat is real. Moonshot's latest model rivals the capabilities of OpenAI's GPT-five point six and Anthropic's Fable on key benchmarks—a compression that underscores how quickly any American lead can shrink. Anthropic's CEO said China was six to twelve months behind in May; ten weeks later, Moonshot released a competitor. With OpenAI and Anthropic preparing for major IPOs whose valuations rest on frontier AI remaining scarce and indispensable, a market shift toward cheaper alternatives they can't control poses a fundamental challenge.
