Calculator UI Is More Complex Than You Might Think

tech

Calculators are so familiar we rarely think about how they work — but Hackaday points out that their user interfaces are surprisingly complex. The logic to handle sequential operations and operators requires an intricate state machine underneath. Beyond the basic arithmetic, edge cases compound fast: When you press an operator after equals, should it start a new calculation or begin a negative number? Does the display clear when you enter a new digit? Even basic four-function calculators need dozens of special rules to feel intuitive. It's a reminder that the most commonplace tools often conceal the most intricate engineering.
