Open-Source Mid-Drive e-Bike Motor Has Lots of Promise, and Hyphens

tech

A maker locked out of his e-bike's motor decided to build his own. Per Hackaday, [Pedro Neves] designed an open-source motor salvaging a unit from an old angle grinder — resourceful and environmentally friendly. He's targeting a top speed of twenty-five kilometers per hour, though local regulations may vary where you are. The design leans on three-D-printed components for accessibility, but critical parts like bearings are solid metal, with a clutch that lets you pedal home if the battery fails. It's part of a bigger cargo-bike project, complete with design files and build videos for anyone ready to build one.
