Gas prices are rising again — and so is GOP grief in the midterms

The collapse of President Trump's Iran deal is driving gas prices back up, and per Axios, that's spelling trouble for Republicans heading into November. Nationally, average gas prices have climbed to around four dollars a gallon in recent days, up from three point seventy-five earlier this month, after combat with Iran intensified. Research shows that gas prices have an outsized political impact — a study spanning three decades found that a ten-cent jump in prices typically drops a president's approval rating by zero point six percent, an effect that extends to the president's party. With Iran showing no signs of reopening the Strait of Hormuz and the conflict showing no clear path to resolution, gas prices could remain volatile through the midterm election — and that volatility could reshape GOP prospects.
