Jury Finds Home Financing Scheme That Targeted Muslims in Minnesota Violated State Law
business
A Minnesota jury has found home seller Chadwick Banken liable for targeting East African Muslims with deceptive real estate deals marketed as religiously compliant. Over two weeks of trial, jurors determined Banken violated state laws by selling homes at inflated prices with hidden interest, complex paperwork, and massive balloon payments designed to force buyers into default. Through one hundred sixty homes sold via contract for deed, Banken left customers financially ruined. One victim testified he made one hundred seventy thousand dollars in payments before abandoning the house, living homeless in his truck for a year to rebuild his savings. According to the Minnesota Attorney General's office, backing the case was an investigation by ProPublica and the Sahan Journal. A judge will now determine restitution and penalties, which could reach twenty-five thousand dollars per violation.
