Australia's Prime Minister recently proposed treating the nation's four point five trillion dollar superannuation pool—Australians' collective retirement savings—as a national asset to tackle housing shortages and productivity challenges. Per The Conversation (Australia), while super funds do have billions available for long-term investment, forcing them to direct money toward government-picked projects risks distorting markets and shortchanging the retirees they're supposed to serve. Experts instead suggest the government can use tax policy, structured infrastructure deals, and disclosure requirements to nudge super funds toward national priorities.
