Electric vehicles are built different. Australia needs better data to get the most out of the shift

The Conversation reports that Australia's electric vehicle market has been transformed by Chinese manufacturers. Seven years ago, China barely played a role in Australia's car market; today it supplies roughly eighty percent of Australian EVs. Battery and plug-in hybrid vehicles now make up nearly half of all new car sales. But there's a critical gap: Australia lacks the data to plan for this transition. After its domestic auto industry closed about a decade ago, authorities stopped gathering detailed information on the vehicle fleet. The Motor Vehicle Census ended in twenty twenty-one. As a result, planners can't see where EVs are concentrated or whether owners want to feed power back to the grid — which many increasingly can. Understanding the EV fleet would help Australia design power grids and charging networks to match demand, speed clean energy transition, and ensure emergency responders and repair shops can handle the new technologies safely. Without this data, the country risks racing forward without capturing the full benefits.
