Abortion clinic-style protest bans could reduce ‘distress and anxiety’ at synagogues and Jewish schools, Dreyfus says

politics

Australia's former attorney general Mark Dreyfus is urging governments to consider banning protests outside synagogues and Jewish schools, The Guardian reports. Giving evidence to the antisemitism royal commission, the federal Labor backbencher pointed to a twenty nineteen high court decision that upheld safe access zone laws in Victoria and Tasmania, which bar protests within one hundred fifty metres of abortion clinics. Dreyfus argued a similar model could reduce distress and anxiety at Jewish sites, and described antisemitic abuse directed at him, including being labelled a genocidal Zionist. The commission is still hearing evidence.
