Atlas Obscura tells the story of Nottingham Victoria, a Victorian railway marvel that required one of the era's boldest excavations. To bring trains to the city center, engineers carved a cutting fifty-eight feet deep at its deepest, removing six hundred thousand cubic yards of stone and displacing over one thousand residential properties along with twenty pubs, a church, and a workhouse. After sixty-seven years of operation, the station closed in nineteen sixty-seven, and the cutting became the foundation for the Victoria Centre shopping mall. Today, massive blue brick retaining walls and remnants of the tunnel portals remain visible—monuments to an age when engineering ambition literally reshaped the city.
