Atlas Obscura reports on a two-thousand-year-old monument in Rimini, Italy: the Arco di Augusto, the Arch of Augustus. Built in twenty-seven BC, it's the oldest preserved triumphal arch in northern Italy. Originally erected to mark the city's eastern entrance, the arch became a celebration of Emperor Augustus and his restoration of the Via Flaminia, the great road connecting Rome to the coast. What gives it deeper significance: its sheer size—so large that doors could never close it—stands as a physical statement that Rome's dangerous civil wars were over, and peace had finally arrived.
