Drumcoltran Tower in Kirkgunzeon, Scotland

Atlas Obscura is reporting on Drumcoltran Tower, a historic Scottish tower house built around fifteen fifty in Kirkgunzeon. The structure is architecturally distinctive — an L-shaped design with rounded corners, unusual for its era. Standing three stories with defensive walls and a parapet, it originally housed a lord's great hall and storage chambers, heated by massive fireplaces. Over the centuries, the tower was gradually softened: window openings were enlarged in the seventeen hundreds when defense became less critical, and it eventually housed farm workers. Though its upper floors have decayed, the staircases remain in good condition, allowing visitors to climb to the parapet for commanding views across the Scottish countryside. Today, Drumcoltran sits at the edge of an active farmyard, maintaining the agricultural connection it's held throughout its history.
