Outcry in Algeria over doctor deaths after gruelling on-call shifts

Euronews reports that the deaths of two doctors have set off widespread anger in Algeria. A resident neurosurgeon died of a heart attack after finishing a twenty-four-hour shift, and an anaesthesiologist died days later. Colleagues say the two deaths are not isolated, pointing to years of chronic overwork, understaffing and inadequate conditions across Algeria's public hospitals. Medical staff are now calling for a revision of the on-call rules governing their shifts, which date back to twenty thirteen.
