NAPLAN results are coming home. Here’s what parents should keep in mind

Australian families are receiving their children's NAPLAN results this week, per The Conversation. NAPLAN—the national literacy and numeracy test held in March—scores students across four proficiency levels: exceeding, strong, developing, and needs additional support. Educators, though, stress that one exam on one day tells only part of your child's learning story. The test cannot measure creativity, curiosity, resilience, or achievement in other subjects. Also worth noting: more than one million students experienced technical difficulties during this year's testing, specifically in the writing component, so if a result seems surprisingly different from your child's usual performance, that's worth raising with their school. The key is to talk with your child about how they felt taking the test, look for patterns across classroom work and teacher observations, and remember that NAPLAN can help frame questions about learning—but it can't provide all the answers.
