Fifth person dies in New York City amid legionnaires’ disease outbreak

The Guardian reports that a fifth person has died in the legionnaires' disease outbreak on Manhattan's Upper East Side. In an update issued Tuesday, New York City's health department put the total at eighty-two identified cases, with eight people still hospitalized and fifty-six discharged. Legionnaires' is a severe form of pneumonia that spreads through mist from contaminated water systems. Officials have traced this outbreak to cooling towers in the neighborhood, and Mamdani says the source of exposure has been eliminated.
