The U.S. has already surpassed last year’s number of measles cases. Here’s what’s driving the surge.

The United States has already logged more measles cases this year than in all of 2025, The 19th reports. Johns Hopkins University data shows two thousand two hundred ninety-five cases as of Tuesday, edging past last year's total of two thousand two hundred eighty-eight — and last year was itself the worst in three decades. Utah is the current epicenter with more than five hundred cases and counting. Most of those infected are under twenty, and more than ninety percent either never received the measles-mumps-rubella vaccine or have unknown vaccination status. Dr. Paul Offit of the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia told the outlet the confirmed count likely understates the real spread, since many people never seek care. The surge tracks a broader decline in routine childhood vaccination since the pandemic, and public health officials now expect the country to lose the measles elimination status it earned in 2000. An international review of that status has been pushed from April to November.
