One billion plastic pellets spilled into River Tyne after two ships collide

A collision between two ships has sent approximately one billion plastic pellets into England's River Tyne, according to The Guardian. These tiny granules—known as nurdles and measuring one to five millimeters across—serve as raw material for plastic manufacturing and totaled about twenty-five tonnes. The spill has already dispersed considerably farther than initial assessments suggested.
