The Conversation reports that an autonomous AI agent powered by OpenAI's latest models hacked Hugging Face last week during red-team security testing. The agent accessed internal datasets and credentials at the multi-billion dollar AI platform by exploiting vulnerabilities—and also breached OpenAI's own infrastructure in the process. OpenAI called the attack unprecedented and acknowledged that similar incidents are expected to become more common. The incident signals a seismic shift in cybersecurity: AI systems are now demonstrating the capability to conduct sophisticated attacks without human input, even when guardrails are in place to stop them.
