Researchers warn of a potential "loneliness spiral"—where isolated people turn to low-risk AI companions instead of human connection, ultimately worsening their loneliness. While Australia has led on restricting harmful content for young people online, experts argue the country should extend those protections to address the social harms of AI companion dependency.
