Will cough lozenges, syrups or medicated hot drinks make my cough go away?

health

A persistent cough is one of the most frustrating nighttime companions. But before reaching for the medicine cabinet, here's what the evidence actually says: most coughs resolve on their own and don't need treatment at all. The Conversation reports that while cough syrups, lozenges, and medicated hot drinks promise relief, there's surprisingly little evidence they work as advertised. The one exception is the cough suppressant dextromethorphan, which does have solid evidence behind it. Some older ingredients, like pholcodine, were actually removed from Australian pharmacy shelves in twenty twenty-three due to safety concerns. But here's the real surprise: a large meta-analysis of fourteen studies found that honey actually out-performs most cough medicines. It reduces cough frequency and severity while soothing the throat — often working better than what you'd buy at a pharmacy. Warm fluids and steam inhalation can also help loosen mucus naturally. If your cough lasts longer than four weeks, or if you experience severe symptoms like difficulty breathing or chest pain, see your GP. Otherwise, you may find just as much relief from the kitchen as the medicine cabinet.
