FT: EU to let Greek company keep shipping Russian gas to win approval for new sanctions package

The European Union is making a concession to pass tougher sanctions against Russia. Greece blocked approval of the EU's new twenty-first sanctions package in July, demanding protection for Dynagas, a Greek shipping company that transports Russian liquefied natural gas. Meduza reports, citing the Financial Times, that the EU is now considering a twelve-month exception allowing Dynagas to continue shipping Russian LNG to third countries—a timeline that could be extended. The company, owned by Greek billionaire George Prokopiou, operates twenty-seven LNG carriers and has transported more than ten million tons of Russian gas since early twenty twenty-five. The deal underscores the challenge facing Europe as it tries to tighten restrictions on Russia while keeping all member states on board.
