A Death Revives Concerns About Police Brutality Six Years After National Reckoning

KFF Health News reports on the death of Lloyd Gilmore, a forty-four-year-old Missouri man who died in police custody in Sikeston on June tenth. His daughter says Gilmore, who had mental health issues, had asked her to call the police and ran to the station seeking help; during a physical altercation involving seven officers, he was shocked with a Taser and placed in hobble restraints that bind a person's hands and feet. Two autopsies were performed, but as of mid-July his cause of death had not been released while a toxicology report remained pending. The case, KFF Health News says, has revived long-standing concerns among Black residents about racial bias in the city's police department, six years after the killing of George Floyd drove a national reckoning over police brutality that has since faded from public view.
