ProPublica reports on Mark McAfee, who runs America's largest raw-milk dairy and has championed unpasteurized milk for more than two decades. Once a fringe product, raw milk has surged into the mainstream, embraced by Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr., who counts McAfee as a supplier — even though most scientists say it offers no proven benefit over pasteurized milk while carrying over one hundred times the risk of foodborne illness. Since two thousand six, federal and state regulators have linked at least eight outbreaks to McAfee's farm, sickening at least two hundred thirty-three people and hospitalizing forty, though McAfee disputes many of those connections. ProPublica also found the farm made cheese from milk known or suspected to contain pathogens, a practice the Food and Drug Administration ordered it to halt in twenty twenty-four.
