The glowing light bulb discovered by accident in 1675

In sixteen seventy-five, French astronomer Jean Picard made a curious discovery while carrying a mercury barometer across a dark room. The mercury inside glowed faintly—an effect that became known as barometric light. Boing Boing reports the phenomenon attracted some of the era's leading scientists, though it eventually faded from scientific attention.
