Ghana’s president asks for AU debate on South Africa’s ‘escalating xenophobic attacks’

Ghana's president is pushing for continental action on a deadly wave of violence in South Africa. France 24 reports that John Mahama on Thursday called for the African Union to formally address what he described as escalating xenophobic attacks on foreign nationals. According to France 24, more than one hundred sixty thousand foreign nationals have left South Africa over the past two months, and several have died amid rising hostility toward undocumented migrants. The appeal moves a national crisis onto the African Union's agenda, where member states would be asked to weigh a response.
