Hackaday reports on a presentation at Hackaday Europe twenty twenty-six exploring an unconventional approach to drone design. Suryansh Sharma introduced hybrid aircraft that pair balloon technology with multirotor engineering to overcome a core limitation of standard drones: they must continuously expend energy to stay aloft, meaning flight times rarely exceed ten minutes. His design, named BEAVIS—Balloon Enabled Aerial Vehicle for IoT and Sensing—combines a lighter-than-air balloon with four horizontally-mounted motors to achieve over an hour of flight time. The aerodynamics are elegant: firing two opposing motors creates a low-pressure region that pushes the craft downward, while firing all four in coordinated directions generates high pressure underneath to push it upward. BEAVIS later evolved into Janus, a morphing quadrotor blimp that features actuators to pivot motors into vertical orientation for conventional quadcopter flight if the balloon fails. Janus saw real-world deployment in Kenya for ecological data collection, proving that stepping outside the standard design formula can unlock new possibilities when facing mission-specific constraints.
