FDA reports new outbreak of explosive diarrhea with 72 cases identified

Ars Technica reports that the FDA is investigating a new Cyclospora outbreak with seventy-two identified cases—the sixth outbreak the agency has opened in twenty twenty-six. Nationally, the CDC reports more than eleven thousand five hundred cases across forty-one states so far this year, including over three hundred hospitalizations and no deaths. To understand how unusual this is: the U.S. normally sees between two thousand and five thousand Cyclospora cases per year. This year's total already far exceeds that, and we're only in July. Cyclospora is a parasite spread through contaminated food that causes watery diarrhea. When pressed about the situation, Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. characterized the outbreak as under control.
