Scientists have discovered that a single genetic mutation can dramatically change how a coronavirus behaves across different species. New research comparing the original SARS-CoV-2 with a closely related bat-only virus found that just one amino acid difference determines whether the immune system mounts a defense or becomes suppressed. The findings may help explain how animal viruses successfully jump to humans and become far more dangerous.
