France evacuates Cap Ferret peninsula as Spain battles to prevent wildfires merging near Madrid – Europe live

world

France is evacuating the Cap Ferret peninsula as wildfires spread across parts of Europe, The Guardian reports. Residents there have been told to flee using hundreds of mobilised boats or the single road that links the area to the mainland. The paper says the country's south-east is being hit hard too, with dozens of fires fanned by the mistral wind around the historic village of Cotignac, where officials report around twenty-five houses destroyed since Tuesday. In Spain, crews are battling to stop separate wildfires from merging near Madrid.
