More than 80,000 people flee as wildfires spread in south-west France and Spain

More than eighty thousand people have fled fast-moving wildfires burning across south-west France and Spain, The Guardian reports. French authorities ordered the total evacuation, by land and sea, of the Cap Ferret peninsula on the Atlantic coast — one of the country's best-known holiday spots — as an intense and highly unpredictable blaze tore through more than ten thousand hectares. In Spain, the government declared a national emergency as fires merged near Madrid. The evacuation on the French side is being carried out village by village.
