Introducing Lightcone Commons

According to LessWrong, Oliver Habryka is launching Lightcone Commons—a new funding platform designed to help large-scale philanthropists coordinate their giving. The timing is strategic: significant new wealth is expected to flow into charity soon from those cashing out of major AI companies. Habryka, who has previously managed over one hundred fifty million dollars in philanthropic distribution, argues that without a coordinated platform, this money will likely end up in bureaucratic foundations or fall prey to exploitation. Lightcone Commons uses a matching system where funders indicate their values, and then allocate grants collaboratively to maximize impact. The first round is anticipated to involve about twenty million dollars. Nonprofits, for-profits, and individuals can all apply—the application deadline is August twenty-third, twenty twenty-six, with recommendations expected by late October. Funders must be committing at least one hundred thousand dollars this year to participate.
