Judge rebuffs Trump admin demand for phone records from NYT reporters

The Department of Justice has withdrawn subpoenas demanding phone records and grand jury testimony from New York Times reporters, after a federal judge sharply criticized the government's handling of the requests. The reporters had written about security concerns related to an Air Force One jet that was donated to Trump by Qatar. Per Ars Technica, during a Thursday hearing, U.S. District Judge Arun Subramanian grilled Justice Department lawyers for nearly an hour, offering them a choice to either quash the subpoenas or withdraw them. The DOJ chose withdrawal — a setback in the Trump administration's efforts to unmask journalists' confidential sources.
