Bullfighting never took deep root in the Atlantic archipelago, which makes Mata's story unusual. Born in a small village on the island of La Palma, he first emigrated to Venezuela for work before finding his calling in the bullring and returning to Spain. Known as El Canario, he rose through the profession in the 1960s, earning respect as a refined, classical stylist rather than a showman. According to Atlas Obscura, his career ended when he was gored during a bullfight in 1971 and, with inadequate medical facilities and delayed treatment, died two days later at the age of thirty-one — a death that prompted national debate over safety standards in smaller bullrings.
